Everything you need to know before visit National Western Complex

January 7, 2022 by Jeffrey James

The National Western Stock Show and Rodeo makes its return to Denver this weekend after a pandemic-induced hiatus — the event’s second-ever cancellation since its 1906 debut.

  • The 16-day tradition runs Jan. 8–23 at the National Western Complex.

Of note: Despite surging Omicron cases and criticism from public health officials, the show is back in full swing — mostly. Organizers canceled the iconic kickoff parade, scheduled for Thursday, citing expected weather issues.

🤠 Here’s a roundup of everything else you need to know:

  • Ticket information: Costs vary depending on your pass, day of the week and event. Prices for adults range from $17–$70. Admission is free for everyone on Jan. 11.
  • COVID protocols: Proof of vaccination will not be required, but masks are mandated indoors for visitors and Stock Show participants, with the exception of people eating and drinking. (Public officials warn the festival is “not the place to be for those who’ve not been boosted.”)
  • What not to miss: The Mexican rodeo extravaganza, dancing horses, or the grand pix show. For a full schedule, click here.
  • Shops and food: More than 300 vendors sell a variety of food, clothes, collectables and more at the National Western Complex. Scope out your favorites.

National Western Stock Show cancels kickoff parade because of COVID-19 concerns

January 5, 2022 by Jeffrey James

With weather forecasts calling for snow and “dangerously low temperatures,” National Western Stock Show officials canceled the downtown parade and an event planned at McGregor Square in Denver on Thursday.

“We will not risk animal safety with slick streets,” President and CEO Paul Andrews said Tuesday. “Being right isn’t always popular; and being popular isn’t always right. We made the right decision, although a very tough one here.”

“After meeting with weather professionals, veterinarians, livestock and horse experts, we have decided to cancel the parade this Thursday,” Andrews said in a statement. “The forecast calls for snow Wednesday evening and continuing through the night. The larger problems are the single-digit temperatures and high winds making for icy conditions.

“Due to the risk for the parade entries traveling to Denver in high-profile vehicles hauling animals and hitches, as well as the risk for the animals along the parade route, the decision has been made to cancel.”

After the 2021 show was canceled because of COVID-19 concerns, many were looking forward to this year’s kickoff parade, where longhorn steers march down 17th Street and end up in the lobby of the posh Brown Palace Hotel.

First responders were going to be this year’s grand marshal — a first, instead of one or two people serving as grand marshal.

While the 16-day show opens Saturday morning at the Stock Show grounds and Denver Coliseum, Friday is going to be a big day with the ribbon cutting for the new stockyards and the Colorado State University Spur campus, which hosts an event for the new Vida building Friday afternoon.

There’s also high national interest — livestock owners from 42 states registered to show animals at the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo 2022, which runs through Jan. 23. More than 700,000 people are expected to participate in the celebration of agriculture, rodeo, commerce and Western heritage, Andrews said.

“Start with the grand opening of the new stockyards. That alone makes this year’s ticket a historic keepsake,” Andrews said previously, noting the last time the show had a stockyard grand opening was in 1906.

“These stockyards will forever change the way livestock are marketed in the United States,” he said.

Stetson Wright keeps adding gold buckles to his collection. His latest came at the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge when he secured his third consecutive all-around world championship Thursday night before 16,948 fans at the Thomas & Mack Center.

“It means a lot to me because that means I put together a full year where I was doing two of the toughest and most dangerous (events),” Wright said. “I think it’s pretty sweet that I had so much luck and kept my body this healthy. “Oh, it’s awesome I mean Trevor is the greatest there’s ever been. So, to have my name next to him it’s pretty awesome.”

Brazile, the King of Cowboys, won a PRCA-record 26 world championships, including 14 all-around gold buckles. “I’m here to win rounds, I’m not worried about gold buckles right now,” Wright said. “I’ll worry about them when I’m holding onto them.”

Wright has $498,328 in the all-around the PRCA | RAM World Standings. He secured his latest all-around crown, thanks to splitting the win in Round 8 in saddle bronc riding with a 91-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Foul Motion. He earned $24,166. Wright is the first cowboy in PRCA history to win three straight all-around titles to start his career. He also is the first cowboy to collect three all-around titles in a row since Brazile accomplished the feat from 2013-2015.

With two nights left to go at the Finals, the Milford, Utah, cowboy has a $269,260 lead over tie-down roper Caleb Smidt for the top spot. Wright has earned $598,990 so far this season in saddle bronc riding and bull riding. That shatters Trevor Brazile’s PRCA all-time single season earnings record of $518,011, which was set in 2015. He will have four more outs to increase the all-time mark. His run at this year’s NFR is highlighted by a 94.5-point bull ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Chiseled in Round 5. He has one split win and two second place finishes in saddle bronc riding.

Landingham for an 87.5-point ride to earn a split go-round victory in Round 4. Orin Larsen seeks to find the pay window for the fourth-straight night after drawing Calgary Stampede’s Arbitrator Joe. Larsen, currently sitting fifth in the average, has collected one go-round win so far at the 2021 Wrangler NFR. No one has ridden the bull this season, Trey Benton III was bucked off Switchback in Round 4. NFR average leader Parker Breding will look to stay on his hot streak Friday night. The Montana cowboy has drawn Salt River Rodeo’s Boss Baby. It’ll be a tall task for Breding, the bull has yet to be ridden so far in 2021.

STETSON WRIGHT DAZZLES IN ROUND 7, WINNING BULL RIDING ON HIS SECOND RE-RIDE
During his short PRCA career, Stetson Wright has become a household name winning back-to-back all-around world championships and last year’s bull riding crown. Add Wednesday night to his list of great accomplishments. Wright rode three bulls in less than 15 minutes and then won Round 7 on his second re-ride bull. The Milford, Utah, cowboy had a 90.5-point ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Bloomer’s High Rise. “The pain is going to go away and especially after the tenth round is up, so I figured I’d put everything on the line,” said the exhausted Wright. “I risked getting every bone in my body broke to win and right now it’s going good, but we have a few more to go.” Wright, 22, said he never been on three bulls in one rodeo at the PRCA level. Wright earned $46,374, counting ground money, since he and Josh Frost were the only two cowboys to make the whistle in Round 7. Frost, who had a 52.5-point ride on Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Record Rack’s Viper, earned $40,713.

STETSON WRIGHT CLOSING IN ON THIRD CONSECUTIVE ALL-AROUND TITLE
Stetson Wright has all but locked up his third straight PRCA All-Around World Championship headed into Round 8 of the 2021 Wrangler NFR. If Wright can finish the job in Las Vegas, he will become the first cowboy to win three straight all-around titles since Trevor Brazile accomplished the feat from 2013-2015. With three nights left to go at the Finals, the Milford, Utah, cowboy has a $254,331 lead over tie-down roper Caleb Smidt for the top spot. Wright has won $467,197 so far this season in saddle bronc riding and bull riding. Stetson now has his sights set on breaking Trevor Brazile’s PRCA all-time single season earnings record of $518,011, which was set in 2015. He will have six more outs to try and set the all-time mark. His run at this year’s NFR is highlighted by a 94.5-point bull ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Chiseled in Round 5. He has two second place finishes in saddle bronc riding.

NEWS & NOTES
In bareback riding, five-time PRCA World Champion Kaycee Feild looks to make a strong final push, matching up with Hi Lo Pro Rodeo’s High Heels. The horse was awarded the bareback horse of the night after bucking off Caleb Bennett in Round 3. Feild currently holds an $11,550 lead over Jess Pope, the current leader in the average. Bennett will aim to build off his 86-point ride Wednesday night, drawing Calgary Stampede’s Soap Bubbles. The nine-time NFR qualifier has only found the pay window once thus far. Soap Bubbles will make his 2021 Wrangler NFR debut Thursday, entering with an average stock score of 44.18 and seven qualified rides.…In the saddle bronc riding, two-time PRCA World Champion Zeke Thurston has a favorable matchup in Round 8. He has drawn Bridwell Pro Rodeo’s Indian Burn. In nine outs this season, only three cowboys have lasted the eight seconds. Layton Green had a 91-point ride on the horse at ProRodeo Tour Finale in Salinas, Calif., Sept. 26. Spencer Wright will look to continue his solid Wrangler NFR on Thursday night, when he matches up with Beutler & Son Rodeo’s Nutrena’s Killer Bee. Wright is sitting second in the average and will try to cover a horse that has yet to have an out at this year’s Finals…In the bull riding, Josh Frost will look to build off his second-place finish last night. In Round 8, he’s drawn Four Star Rodeo’s Shark Bait. The bull has bucked off 83 percent of would-be riders in 2021. The only cowboy to cover Shark Bait this season is the world’s No.1 man Sage Kimzey. That ride came in Salinas, Calif. on Sept. 23. Ky Hamilton has a golden opportunity in Round 8 on Stockyards ProRodeo’s Soy El Fuego. In Round 3 of the NFR, Parker Breding rode the bull for 88 points and a third-place finish.

BOQUET OUT OF NFR; BROUSSARD TO MISS ROUNDS 7 & 8
After the conclusion of Round 6, two additional cowboys will miss time at the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Three-time NFR qualifier and Round 4 bull riding winner Dustin Boquet is out for the remainder of the Wrangler NFR. Boquet suffered a left shoulder injury in Round 6 after his 79-point ride on Painted Pony Championship Rodeo’s Cocktail Diarrhea. “I broke that humerus (bone) again that I had just come back off of, from September” said Boquet. “It was just a freak deal with how I landed, Dr. Tandy Freeman said it had nothing to do with my previous break.” He said unfortunately injuries happen in the sport of rodeo. “I’m just super thankful that I got that round win when I did,” he said. “I’m not mad about it (the injury). It’s just a part of it. I’m going to get right, come back next year, and get after it full throttle.” He won $43,544 with the Round 4 win aboard Hou’s Bad News. On top of a previous left shoulder dislocation from Round 3, bareback rider Taylor Broussard suffered a neck injury on Tuesday night. He doctored released out of Round 7 and as such will also have to miss Round 8. If I can’t perform my best, my best bet is to take a little break and come back. I will be back for Round 9.” Broussard is sitting 14th in the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $82,381. He has three qualified rides so far at the NFR.

SADDLE BRONC RIDER RYDER WRIGHT WINS ROUND 6

It was Wright’s second consecutive round win and upped his 2021 NFR earnings to $84,459. He leads the PRCA | RAM World Standings with $266,353. Bareback rider Orin Larsen had not collected a check at the Wrangler NFR before Tuesday night. That changed in Round 6. Biglow will go head-to-head with Calgary Stampede’s Yippee Kibitz. Fellow NFR qualifier Garrett Shadbolt had an 88-point ride on Yippee Kibitz in Round 2 to collect a second-place finish…In the saddle bronc riding, Dawson Hay hasn’t had the start to the NFR he’s wanted, but he’ll have an opportunity to visit the pay window in Round 7. Wrangler NFR average leader Parker Breding won Round 2 on the bull with a 90-point ride. Breding has another solid matchup as well in Round 7. After winning Round 2 and Round 4, the Edgar, Mont. cowboy has drawn Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Priefert’s Shaft. That bull led Stetson Wright to the pay window in Round 2.

The injury occurred on Monday when Sundell was thrown off a horse during the Grand Entry for Round 5 while carrying the Iowa state flag.

“I ended up having a fracture in my spine,” said Sundell, the 2018 PRCA World Champion Saddle Bronc Rider. “Absolutely (it’s heartbreaking), but it’s just part of it. Being around this sport things are going to happen like that.”

Sundell won Round 4 of the 2021 Wrangler NFR with an 89.5-point ride on Powder River Rodeo’s Bet The Ranch. He was sitting 14th in the average headed into Tuesday. He is expected to be sideline for two to three months.

TEGAN SMITH CAPTURES ROUND 3 IN RECORD-BREAKING FASHION
Saddle bronc rider Tegan Smith won his first career round in record-breaking fashion.

The Iowa cowboy had a 91-point ride on Calgary Stampede’s Yesterday’s Delivery to claim the Round 3 victory at the 2021 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Teton Ridge before 17,153 spectators at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Smith broke the Round 3 record, which was established by Allen Boore with his 90.5-point ride on the same horse – Yesterday’s Delivery in 2020.

“It’s amazing,” said Smith, 23. “It’s everything you dream of as a kid. Well, that’s the name of the game. You have to make the whistle no matter how hard you fight. You know in this pen it’s going to be tough to ride so you really have to fight.”

Smith is seventh in the world standings with $125,472.

“(I need to) keep it rolling,” Smith said. “I’ll be fresh and ready to go.”

Bareback rider Kaycee Feild came to the Wrangler NFR as the reigning world champ.

The Genola, Utah cowboy is on a quest for a PRCA record six bareback gold buckles. Feild took a step in that direction by winning Round 3 with a 90-point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Full Baggage.

“This rodeo I have watched it from sitting in the stands to watching my dad to competing in it and I’ve learned what I think are all the tricks,” Feild said. “Round 3 it is awesome to win it and it feels great. I want to keep chipping away a little bit at a time. There is still a lot of rodeo left.

“Not only a lot of money, but there are a lot of things can happen in seven rounds with this caliber of bucking horses that are coming up.”

Feild moved to second in the world standings with $178,964. Feild now has 24 career NFR round wins, which puts him in second place on the all-time bareback riding list one behind Bobby Mote.
