Las Vegas, NV (December 6, 2023) – The Las Vegas Events Board of Trustees and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) Board of Directors announced with deep sorrow the cancellation of the first performance of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo®, originally scheduled for Thursday, December 7th. This decision follows the tragic shooting that occurred on the UNLV campus earlier today.
“All of us are saddened by the events that occurred today,” stated Tim Keener, President of Las Vegas Events. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who have been affected. We are incredibly grateful to the first responders, police, security personnel, and the UNLV community for their swift and courageous actions in the face of this tragedy.”
PRCA CEO Tom Glause echoed Keener’s sentiments, saying, “Today’s shooting at UNLV was deeply disturbing and alarming. The PRCA extends its sincere gratitude to the law enforcement and first responders who responded with professionalism and bravery. Our primary concern at this time is the well-being of the victims and those affected by this senseless act of violence.”
Further details regarding the rescheduling of the cancelled performance and any potential adjustments to the NFR schedule will be announced on Thursday morning, December 7th.
Despite the cancellation of the rodeo performance, the Cowboy Channel Cowboy Christmas, taking place at the South and Central Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center, will proceed as planned. The event, open to the public, will run from Thursday, December 7th through Saturday, December 16th.
The Las Vegas Events and PRCA teams remain committed to providing a safe and enjoyable environment for participants and fans alike. The NFR will resume as soon as possible, with the safety and well-being of everyone involved remaining a top priority.
